Employee Spotlight: Stella

Stella is the new Lead Direct Supported Professional (DSP) at Search's Central Park Supported Living home!

Her supervisor says, "Stella has been such a great part of the Central Park team and has really stepped up as the lead. She has a very positive energy and goes above and beyond to make the guys happy. She advocates for their needs and is always looking for ways to improve the house. She is a great leader to her coworkers and is willing to step up and help when needed. Stella also cooks amazing (and healthy) meals and sends photos of their smiling faces at dinner (whether it’s taco Tuesday or a chicken and salad kind of night!)."

We sat down for a short Q&A with Stella:

Q: How did you get started in this career?
A: I have a sibling that has autism. He inspired me to get started in this career path. Helping others makes me feel like I am helping him. He is back home in Uganda.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of the job?
A: The smiles and the satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part in bringing happiness or restoring happiness and dignity in one’s life if fulfilling.

Q: How do you stay motivated when things get tough?
A: I always wear a smile and also remind myself to view the individual first and not view their disability.

Q: What is your favorite part of working at Search?
A: The individuals we serve are the sweetest and most fun people I know. I always have a blast coming to work. Working for Search has always been a great learning experience. Search always goes above and beyond in serving its clients - that alone makes me want to come to work every day.

Q: What advice do you have for people who are thinking about this career?
A: I would say if one is looking for a quick paycheck this not the field for them. But if you’re looking to make a difference in one’s life, and them making a difference in yours, then this is a career path for you. This is a rewarding career. One has to be ready to jump into the individuals’ world to better understand them and their point of view.

Q: What activities, interests, or hobbies do you have outside of Search?
A: I love to cook, interior design, dance, listen to music, and exercise.

Thank you, Stella, for your hard work and dedication!
