Jewel-Osco Grows Long-Time Partnership with Search Inc.

Search Inc. (Search) has partnered with Jewel-Osco for many years through our Career Services program. Career Services at Search places people with intellectual and developmental disabilities into competitive, integrated employment in their local communities and provides job readiness support. We have formed strong relationships with 11 Jewel-Osco stores in the Chicagoland area , with six active placements through Career Services in five stores. Jewel-Osco has proven to be a consistent and important partner for hiring people with disabilities.

Robert Parkinson, Career Services Division Manager, shared that, “Our partnership with Jewel- Osco has been strong, ongoing and mutually beneficial. No matter the specific store location, Jewel-Osco has provided meaningful opportunities and outstanding support to the people Search Inc. serves. From job exploration, informational interviews, accessible training; to on-boarding, job coaching, schedule accommodations and natural supports, Jewel-Osco consistently provides an excellent capacity to provide a workplace environment that produces successful, long-term employment outcomes for people with disabilities.”

One of our key collaborations has been with the Jewel-Osco at 9449 Skokie Boulevard, where one of our residents, Jimmy, has worked for the last three years. Jimmy, pictured above, has found great success in his role and is known as a dedicated, personable employee. With the support of the store Front-End Manager we were able to grow our relationship with Jewel-Osco into a grant opportunity!

As a result of this opportunity, Jewel-Osco has generously donated $2,500 from the Jewel-Osco Foundation to support our community integration program, cementing their dedication to Search’s mission and programs. Our community integration activities are a key element of our Adult Learning Program, offering recreational activities such as art classes and music therapy, cultural experiences, educational opportunities, meals at restaurants and trips to local destinations. These outings move our Adult Learning Program towards an increasingly community-based model, allowing people to fully explore the communities they live in and build meaningful connections.

This grant from Jewel-Osco will move us closer to a world where all people live, learn, work and play alongside one another, bringing their unique abilities to the community. We are very grateful for the ongoing partnership with Jewel-Osco in both our Career Services program and community integration program. We are excited for what is to come!
